Is Resident Evil: Revelations the last hope for Survival-Horror?

Resident Evil: Revelations Producer, Masachika Kawata, spoke to Eurogamer about the future of the series and a possible reboot.

During the interview, Mr. Kawata denied that the mixed reception that Resident Evil 6 received recently, had anything to do with the possibility of doing a series reboot. And said that such a reboot would only take place, if they were to make an open world Resident Evil game.

He also gave an important clue as to the actual direction the series would take in the future:
Masachika Kawata: “Once we see Revelations released on consoles, we’ll be looking very carefully at how the title is received and what feedback we get.
I think we’ll get a lot of input from the fanbase and the media on what it means for Resident Evil, and what it could mean for the future of the series. We’ll definitely be looking at that as a signpost for where we need to be going next”.
In short, Capcom is going to see how Resident Evil: Revelations fares on home consoles. And if the game is successful, then it will very likely be used as the template for future entries of the saga.

So.... Is Resident Evil: Revelations the last hope for Survival-Horror in the series? We shall soon find out.

Revelations Demo at Resident Evil Festival

Capcom recently held a “Resident Evil Festival” in Japan. During the event,  Resident Evil: Revelations Producer Tsukasa Takenaka, played through a demo of the game. With the idea of showing to the media in antecedence, its new and improved features.

Here are some of the highlights of the demo’s play-though:
  • Enemy placement has been fine-tuned and modified. The producer explained that this was done to give veterans of the original 3DS game, an incentive to play the updated version.
  • The producer also gave more details concerning the new Nemesis-like enemy. He said that this new B.O.W. can & will appear anywhere on the boat. He said that there will be no “safety-zones”. So players can never let their guard down. Since the new enemy could appear at any given moment.
  • The demo covered the segment of the game where Jill Valentine has to retrieve a key from a missing FBC agent.
Producer Takenaka also reiterated that HUNK would appear in Raid Mode and spoke about the limited edition sets (Premium and Limited) of the game to be released exclusively in Japan.

3 Reasons Revelations is the best Resi in years!

1) Classic Survival Horror action

Simply put, Revelations is probably as close to the old-school Resident Evil paradigm as you are going to get for a while, if ever. The game utilizes the same over-the-shoulder camera as the last few games, yes, but scales back the action considerably. As such, Revelations places far more emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving, offering a far more cerebral adventure in comparison to recent entries.

2) New enemies and gameplay that add something fresh

The new Ooze foes offer a fantastic middle ground between Ganado and Zombies, combining the shambling nature of the latter with the speed and ferocity of the RE4 and 5’s foes. Throw in the returning Hunters and some brilliantly grotesque bosses, and Revelations has possibly one of the best bestiary’s in the series’ history.

3) It’s actually scary

Revelations does something the last couple of RE games – notably the more recent RE6 – failed spectacularly at – scaring the player. Indeed, this is inherent of Capcom’s decision to place gamers in narrow environments that recall the mansion-like setting of RE1, and implementing some old fashioned scare tactics. Enemies will leap out of closets, drop down through air vents even appear seemingly out of nowhere directly behind your character.

Resident Evil: Revelations HD producer talks about improvements

Famitsu magazine sat down with Resident Evil: Revelations producer Tsukasa Takenaka in this week’s issue to find out what players can expect from the ports. Here’s what he had to share about the upcoming HD port:
  • About the graphics
Takenaka: “A lot of people said the graphics were great on the original as well,” he said, “but with this, it’s not just about supporting HD resolutions. We’ve done much more to it than that. It’s been upgraded to the point where you can find almost nothing that’s the same visually as the original. For example, Chris has a carrying case in the snowy mountain sections, but this actually serves as a first-aid kit, and it comes with a small pair of scissors and other medical equipment. All those little details get depicted here.”
  • About the new B.O.W. & Random Enemy Encounters
Takenaka: “This new creature is a type that hasn’t been around before,” he told Famitsu. “It serves to greatly change the tempo of the game. I think it’s unique in that players will be faced with a decision whenever they have an encounter with it, like ‘What’s the best thing to do here?’ You’ll also run into the previous creatures in different situations from the original.”
  • About Raid Mode
Takenaka: “There are more weapon types available in Raid Mode now,” Takenaka said, “since collecting weapons is part of the whole charm of the thing. However, just throwing them all in would wreck the game balance, so all the enemy positions and items have been fine-tuned as well. Hunk is gifted in martial-arts moves, so I think he’ll provide a different sort of fun from Jill and Chris.

Capcom’s Christian Svensson also had this to add concerning Raid Mode’s new improvements:

“The other thing you should look forward to is trying out the extremely expanded raid mode (details to come in the coming months) in RE:Revelations. I find it scratches a LOT of the same itches (that Resident Evil: Mercenaries provides).”
  • About StreetPass functionality on home consoles
Takenaka: “It’ll be hard to replicate the StreetPass features on consoles, but we’re thinking of ways to include them in some sort of workable form.”

Revelations Director reveals it's secrets

Resident Evil: Revelations director, Nakanishi in a recent interview reveals some ideas for the game that they had to abandon due to some inevitable time and budget restrictions:

Nakanishi: “We had a ton of great ideas and some, like the Genesis scanner, were used in the game, but quite a lot of them went unused,” he told ONM.

“One such idea was a special weapon designed to be used underwater. This weapon would have been received from Chris at the end of Episode 8, but unfortunately the storyline changed during development and we had to cut it.

“Speaking of the storyline, we also made changes to the final scene of the game. In Episode 1, if you look out at the ocean you can see some land in the distance. This was originally going to be the setting of the finale.”

Jill would have found something from her past there, but now you have the ending we see in the finished game, which I won’t spoil here, in case anyone reading this has yet to play the game.”
